The Challenge

Burberry, one of the worlds most renowned luxury retailers with 9,500 colleagues globally faced a critical challenge with their strategic roadmaps. The IT Strategy was critical to the overall success of the organisation but the executives were left confused with how the roadmaps were being presented, and would not commit to the investment need to deliver against the strategy.

Burberry’s key strategic plans over the next 5 years are well documented with ‘Burberry Forward’ the strategic plan to reignite brand desire, improve performance and drive long-term value creation.  The IT Strategy has a big part to play to deliver this with key long term metrics such as:

  • Increasing store productivity through core category amplification, improving e-commerce functionality and rebalance product assortment and styling.

  • leveraging data-driven decision making to complement creativity and intuition all key objectives for the organisation.

The issue being faced was like for many companies, the strategic outline is quite broad, and creating a roadmap across multiple domains such as supply chain, purchasing, stores, legal that all tied together in a coherent way is someone that requires strong leadership and the tools to make it happen.

The Problem With Their Strategic Roadmaps

Like many organisations, they were creating strategic roadmaps in PowerPoint using templates. However, with a team of 20 Enterprise and Solution Architects, this resulted in:

  • Critical decisions around e-commerce transformation, sustainability and data stalled as executives couldn’t interpret complex information.  With so many different roadmaps, and no clear linkage between them or clear path back to the key objectives outline above.

  • There was 20 different Sunray roadmap styles with no consistency, as everyone created a different version from the same template.

  • The Director of Enterprise Architecture spending approximately 2 weeks per quarter reformatting roadmaps for executive presentations, but was not able to show a clear and concise linkage.

  • Approximately 300 hours wasted annually due to formatting issues and limited PowerPoint skills.

  • Poor executive engagement with the final strategic roadmaps due to information overload and limited ability to drill down into details.

"

"Prior to using Konexis, all of our transformation roadmaps were produced in PowerPoint. Every roadmap looked different; they were static, and the experience for our executives was very poor. Now, the leadership team actively enjoys engaging with the strategic roadmaps. The simple, interactive format has at least doubled the level of interest and engagement from our senior stakeholders."

Why Konexis for Strategic Roadmaps?

Burberry turned to Konexis to address these challenges, resulting in a streamlined approach to roadmap creation and presentation.

Key Benefits

  • Quicker Decision Making – As the executives could now understand the roadmaps and the key interdependencies across them, they were able ot make decision fasters, and also removed duplicated initiatives that were not easily visible before.  Key programmes that had significant cross department interdependencies like new visions for e-commerce were at last understandable for executives, which enabled funding to be released.
  • Significant Time Savings: The architecture team reclaimed hundreds of hours previously spent on formatting, with an estimated ROI of at least 5x based on time savings alone.
  • Increased Executive Engagement: Following a key workshop in October 2024, director-level engagement with roadmaps, and the enterprise architecture team.  The feedback was that they were able to interact with the roadmaps, edit in the sessions and then study in their own time, in a way that was not previously possible.  The cross-domain linkage was a key faciliatory in enabling sign off, and also increasing understand of the wider impact of programes across the company. For example, one project in data that was due to be cancelled was revived as it impacted at least 17 other projects, something that only became clear after using Konexis.
  • Improved Consistency: The solution created not only visual consistency across roadmaps but also established a common roadmap language throughout the organisation.
  • Joined Up Roadmaps: It is not really feasible to share information across PowerPoint. However, with the ability to import initiatives that sit across multiple roadmaps and where the data is fully synced, it meant for the first time that Burberry could fully join up their transformation strategy across different departments, reducing duplication of initiatives and showing cross dependencies. Doing this showed at 4 data projects that sat within different business units in different areas that were doing the same thing, and were merged showing approx. £236,000 in cost savings.

Implementation Insights

Whilst the technical implementation was straightforward, several challenges needed to be addressed:

  • Internal Adoption: Varied levels of enthusiasm within the architecture team required additional support for some team members to achieve the necessary level of detail in their roadmaps. This was something that was driven by Rashad Bashir, who has been a champion of Konexis fom day one. He understood the power of strategic roadmaps that could be understood by all and work tirelessly with his team, and support from the product management function at Konexis to get everyone’s roadmaps to the appropriate level, which also had the additional benefit of driving a common language.

  • Visualisation Preferences: Whilst 90% of senior leaders embraced the Sunray canvas view, some directors requested more traditional Gantt chart views—a feature Konexis plans to implement in Q3 2025This has meant a few difficult conversations where the benefit of a sunray canvas has been shown to the directors.

  • Customer-Driven Development: Konexis’s willingness to enhance their product based on customer feedback has been well-received by the Burberry team

"

"Strategic roadmaps are hard, and they're harder still when executives aren't engaged with the content. The board meeting we had in October 2024 was the first time in my 10 years at Burberry that there was active interest in the roadmaps. Being asked to present them again a few months later was also a first, and the investment in Konexis has paid for itself many times over already."
